Design Fundamentals
Key concepts to keep in mind
Key concepts to keep in mind
- Less is more - Keep designs clean and simple to avoid visual confusion
-
Elements of Design
Elements of Design - The tools of Design
Line - straight, curved, wavy, jagged - has "weight" colour, texture and style. Can divide a design or lead the eye.
Shape - 2D area with a defined boundary.
Rectangle, circle, triangle, polygon
Make images recognizable
Geometric shapes (basic traditional shapes), "organic" more free form
Combine shapes to create new shapes
Form - when a shape is shown in 3D - Cube, cylinder, sphere. Uses perspective and light/shadow to give depth
Texture - The "tactile quality" of a surface. Can show or imply how the surface might feel if it were real
Space -Use of positive and negative space influences a design. Can emphasize elements and bring order to a design
Value - Brightness and darkness of elements use in the design
Colour - the use of colour to bring harmony throughout the design - based on colour wheel and rules. Colour contrast can provides hierarchy in a design
Balance - through use of elements of design the objective is to have balance and unity throughout overall design

- Key Concepts in Design
- Hierarchy - emphasis of elements - layout on page - use of space
- Placement/Alignment - balance of elements in relation to one another
- Scale - of elements in relation to one another
- Typography - font choice
- Colour - colour scheme - compliment vs. compete
- Unity/Patterns/Repetition
Design methods to achieve Hierarchy in a design
Important in movie poster. What does the designer and the movie studio want to stand out in their poster to have maximum impact with audience?

Sketching is a quick visual representation of an idea - NOT a finished drawing.
- Must use proper technique and be neat enough to be understood.
- We will only explore the basics of sketching for this assignment during Stage 2 and 3.
- You will be required to make basic lines, shapes and forms to express the idea of your Movie poster choice.
