How to Produce a Television/Youtube Show
Telling a Visual Story
Video Production is a visual medium. Visuals are a much more effective way to tell a story of communicate ideas. Videos are a combination of a number of "Production Elements." Think of Production Elements as the tools video producer use to help tell an engaging visual story. Similar to baking a cake, producing a video needs to use ingredients to create the end product. A video can include any combination of production elements to help make the story more interesting and help paint a picture of what is being spoken about.
Common Production Elements:
1. Video Clips
Interviews of people relevant or having an opinion on the story
Reporter "On-camera" intros/extros and story links
"B Roll" - visuals that support what is being spoken about
2. Voice-Over (V/O)
Narration that is heard "under" other visuals - ie. B Roll, graphics, Archival footage
Can be the voice of the reporter or interview subjects
3. Graphics (GFX) - Static and Animated
Consist of Text, Shapes, Images and/or Logos
"Lower Third" - identifies speakers when we see them - usually only used once
Full Page graphic - provides supporting information such as Statistics and facts to support story
Slab - see supporting information for the topic, also creates visual interest
4. Images/Pictures - used to support story where video clips are not available
5. Archival footage - Historic video/film that supports story. Capturing is not possible because it is about a
Person or event from the past
7. Visual Transitions - Used to visually move or "transition" the story from one segment to another
or to transition to graphic elements within a video segment
8. Music
Can be used to add a mood or feeling - not generally used in most formal news stories
9. Sound Effects (SFX) - Often used in combination with visual transitions
